CALEFACTION, 2023

Tasmanian oak/rock maple laminations, pewter

Calefaction explores how the introduction of deliberate imperfections by way of direct heat upon timber and metal embeds unpredictability within the design process, creating problems, driving flexibility and guiding the design to unique resolutions

The components are formed from two timber species with differing densities, laminated together at graduated thicknesses. The timbers burn at different rates under direct flame creating a linear texture which becomes radial when curved form meets curved edge. Visual cohesion is achieved through the unifying charred finish with poured pewter elements to the tabletop acting as functional placemakers.
